Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Valerie Varan?

Valerie Varan, MS, LPC, NCC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and holistic life coach: a quantum psychology pioneer, author, speaker and lifelong spiritual experiencer. She has a master’s degree in counseling psychology from a CACREP-accredited program, has been a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor since 2002, and has been in private practice since 2006. After over twenty years of holistic counseling for mental health concerns, she now specializes in holistic life and spiritual coaching for adults and teens.

What is holistic life coaching?

Holistic life coaching focuses on personal and spiritual growth, helping you move from “normal” toward fulfilling your goals and vast potential. It sees you through the lens of the whole (mind, body, energy and spirit, and your relationships and environment), helps you catch habits in the way of your progress and develop new patterns, and helps you identify and live your authentic self. It is for you when you don’t feel you have a mental health disorder, but you’d love help with personal, relationship or spiritual goals.

Is coaching the same as psychotherapy?

No. Psychotherapy assesses, diagnoses and treats mental health disorders and can be covered by insurance, with HIPAA and legal confidentiality. Coaching is not treatment for a mental health disorder and is not a substitute for counseling, psychotherapy or substance abuse treatment. While Valerie is a Licensed Professional Counselor, she is not currently accepting psychotherapy clients; she is only accepting clients for coaching. If you are working with a psychotherapist, she may still be able to help from the coaching perspective; simply let her know you are doing both.

What does Valerie help with?

Tools in four areas. Mind: new constructive thinking habits, mindfulness, and ways to focus and quiet the mind. Body: nutrition to calm emotions and improve sleep, movement to release tension, activities to re-energize your passions. Energy: somatic or energy-based tools to release stress, and focused awareness to develop subtle energy perception and intuition. Soul: deeper awareness to reach higher consciousness, dreamwork, integrating near-death or spiritual experiences, and co-creation.

What is spiritual life coaching?

Spiritual support and guidance offered within the context of your own beliefs, experiences and worldview. It may be for a subtle nudge you feel from your soul, the Universe or God; for finding your purpose; for a career that has lost its meaning; for guidance that feels soulful or sacred; or for integrating a direct spiritual experience with someone nonjudgmental who will listen, support and validate it.

Do I have to be religious?

No. Belonging to a particular religion is not necessary in order to get in touch with your essential nature that is spirit. If you are not interested in such topics, you won’t bring them up and they won’t be part of your sessions. For those who do raise them, Valerie can help you make more sense of your spiritual inquiry within the context of your faith, and become more aware of how it affects your life choices.

Can Valerie help after a near-death or spiritually transformative experience?

Yes. As a lifelong spiritual experiencer herself, Valerie helps people who have had a near-death, out-of-body or other spiritually transformative experience integrate it into their lives, finding alignment, balance, healthier relationships, embodiment, peace and purpose. You will be listened to without judgment and guided within the context of your own belief system; she can validate your experience with science, help you clarify what it means for daily life, and help you tell spiritual emergence from emergency.

Why is it so hard to talk about a spiritual experience?

Because the experience is so often dismissed. Research finds most people have had some kind of spiritual experience, but brush it off or don’t feel safe sharing it for fear of being called “crazy”, and one in five experiencers report harm from disclosing to a health-care provider. That is one reason an IANDS symposium found it usually takes 5 to 30 years to integrate a spiritually transformative or near-death experience.

Is there a support group for spiritual experiencers?

Yes. Valerie facilitates spiritual experiencer support groups, nationally via Zoom or in person in the Lakeland–Tampa Bay–Sarasota area of Florida. Groups of one to five sessions in a series are at no charge. Groups held at a place of worship can be co-facilitated with clergy. Those who have had a spiritual experience share as they feel comfortable and receive support and validation.

What is quantum psychology?

Quantum psychology is a perspective within psychology that sees consciousness as quantum: nonlocal (beyond the limits of space and time), entangled (what happens to one part simultaneously affects the others) and multidimensional (with layers within spacetime and beyond). It offers a scientific basis to understand unusual experiences in consciousness beyond the body. Valerie is sought out as a pioneer of quantum psychology, and her book Living in a Quantum Reality explores it.

What is Valerie’s book about?

Living in a Quantum Reality: Using Quantum Physics and Psychology to Embrace Your Higher Consciousness (Turning Stone Press, 2015) is a self-help book based on Valerie’s experience in life and in private practice. It brings concepts from quantum physics to energy, consciousness, the higher self and spiritual experiences, with practical exercises for reaching higher levels of consciousness.
